Unconscious Process and Perception
How often do you look at the world in a different way? Is it a few times a day, week, or perhaps never? Well, today I’d like to talk about looking at the world in a new way.
How can this help you? Maybe you have something like writers block, or just can’t get thoughts and ideas to flow as they used to. Whatever it may be, you have reached a mental brick wall, and need inspiration to knock it down.
The reason I put, “unconscious processes,” in the title is quite simple. Everyday, we do repetitions actions which switch our conscious mind on auto-pilot. The most common example is driving to work or some other place on a regular basis. Can you recall everything you see on the way? - In most cases you can. But you probably can’t recall something which changes, like the color of the car that you drove behind. You have repeated that trip over and over in your mind to the point where you reach boredom. Once you do something again and again, you subconscious mind takes over. This can be a good thing if your mind needs more time to solve other problems that arise during your day. Then again, it can be a bad thing. When you sit down and try to be creative, you are probably trying to draw from the expansive sights, smells, and sounds that fill our world for inspiration. Since you mind has filtered most of that out, you may be hard pressed to find something to draw from.
Yet, all is not lost. Just as you trained your mind to filter out all of the unwanted or unneeded details, so can you become aware of them once again. It all comes down to perception- How you perceive the world around you. With a little practice, you can begin to see the wonder behind every little object in the world.
If you want to perceive the world in a different way, all you have to do is open up you imagination. This might take you anywhere from imagining that you are the size of a grain of sand, to living out your life as an immovable tree. Once you begin to imagine, your perception will widen and allow you to create and find inspiration in almost anything.
So don’t let your age or occupation limit this thing we call imagination. It is not just something you used back in kindergarten to see the world. Rather it is a tool that all of us should use to enhance our understanding of the world we live in.
